Students will be introduced to the plot pyramid structure via video and discussion/lecture. The whole class will watch the short "The Present" together to identify parts of the plot pyramid. Students will then be divided into groups to watch a short together and identify the parts of the plot pyramid. Finally students will individually answer the plot pyramid responses for a third short by themselves. Students will be asked to participate and discuss the text and offer their own thoughts and insights into each of the shorts and the events that take place. Finally students will explain plot to a younger student to demonstrate mastery. Students will be provided with Google Slides (that can optionally be printed) to guide their study, as well as a link to an online copies of the shorts being used in class.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to:
-identify the key parts of the plot pyramid (exposition, inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, denouement)
-apply understanding of the plot pyramid to Pixar shorts
-explain how a plot pyramid is used to structure fictional texts
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Pixar shorts deal with emotional topics sometimes, including disabilities and loss. These are meant to have deeper meanings and teach lessons. One short will deal with a disability and how the person overcomes this perceived detriment.

I am a certified English teacher for grades 7-12 in the state of Pennsylvania and have been teaching for 14 years. I have a master's degree in English curriculum and instruction and have been teaching this lesson for several years to the joy of my students.
