Practice Your Watercolor Skills!
Class experience
This class is designed for learners who are already familiar with painting with watercolor and would like to continue to paint together in a small group setting with instruction and support. We will review some basic techniques very briefly at the beginning of class (dry on dry, dry on wet, wet on dry, wet on wet, masking, layering and mixing color, washes, etc.) before planning something to paint (could be a landscape, could be flowers, could be something of the learner's own interest) and...
Students will review basic watercolor techniques and learn how to plan a larger piece; watercolor often requires both layering and planning. We'll also cover the importance of clean-up and taking care of your brushes.
Learners will need a few sheets of watercolor paper (any size will work, though larger tends to be easier. Watercolor paper absorbs water and paint faster than regular drawing paper, so I recommend watercolor paper -- any brand is fine -- over drawing paper for this class), any watercolor paint set (any brand will work but ideally will contain red, yellow, blue, white, and black), any number of brushes of different sizes (the brush that comes in the kit is totally fine, and the class can be completed with one brush, but learners can experiment with as many brushes as they want), a cup or dish for rinsing their brush, and a flat surface for painting (watercolor tends to be an easier cleanup, but can sometimes get messy). We will also need masking tape or painter's tape (paper tape or washi tape can also work) for masking -- we'll use this to create borders on the piece we create. (Important note: scotch tape doesn't work well for this because it sticks to the paper and doesn't peel off easily at the end.) Learners may also want a paper towel or cloth nearby in case of spills, and if your learner likes to wear a painting apron or smock, they are welcome to do so if they would like.
