Practical Applications of Ratios and Proportions
Class experience
In this Pre-Algebra unit, learners will be introduced to ratios and proportions and how to solve them. We will then apply them to three real-world contexts: finding the height/length of a structure using similar triangles, scaling a recipe up and down, and making a pie chart for a set of data. Session 1: Intro to Ratios and Strategies for Setting Up and Solving Proportions Lesson: Students will be introduced to ratios and discover and practice three strategies for solving proportions....
I've been teaching ratios and proportions for almost as long as I've been an educator! I enjoy this topic because it is very practical in a variety of fields. I designed this class so that it would be engaging and fun, while also covering critical pre-algebra content.
All handouts will be provided in the Outschool classroom at least 24 hours before the start of the relevant class. Learners will also need the following: a protractor a calculator a pencil and eraser a ruler or other device for marking straight lines a notebook or looseleaf paper coloring materials -- markers, colored pencils, crayons, etc Learners will also need a recipe of their choice and the tools and ingredients necessary for preparing their recipe. More information will be provided about this in Session 2. Learners will also need a set of categorical data. This can be from a survey, experiment, or internet search. We will discuss how to select possible sets of data in Session 3.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learners will need to do some light cooking in this class. The recipe is left to the discretion of the family as long as it has at least 5 ingredients. Learners and parents are urged to work together to find a recipe that is suitable for the student to prepare independently, or to arrange for adult supervision.
