Class Experience

Welcome to the Power Hour Study Group! This 60-minute "study hall" hosted by a certified ADHD coach is structured with neurodiverse students in mind (but all students are welcome) and incorporates engaging and effective strategies for better focus, productivity, and time-management. Great for homeschool students! Use coupon code VANRISTUDY7 at checkout to try a study session for just $1.

Did you know that for many neurodiverse students, working with others in a group, even if they’re not working on the same task or even talking to each other, can help them focus and get things done? It’s a strategy called body doubling and it’s what we’ll be doing during our time together. A body double doesn’t help you with your task, but working alongside someone else (even virtually) can help you feel more supported, focused, and productive.

Our time will be divided into two 25-minute focused work periods followed by a 5-minute break.

Here's how our study group is structured and what to expect when you arrive:

-When you arrive, we'll spend the first few minutes on introductions and quickly sharing what you'll be working on (math homework, a book report, reading a chapter in your history book, a project, anything at all!) You have the option to share what you'll be working on in the class chat, if you prefer. (Please note, this group DOES NOT provide academic tutoring, instruction, or homework assistance. Each student will work independetly on their own assignment/task/project but support will be available if they have difficulty staying focused and moving forward with completing their task).

-I'll set a 25-minute timer that you'll be able to see on your computer screen and we'll all mute our lines and work for 25 minutes.

-When the timer goes off, we'll take a 5 minute break. During this time you can stretch, get a drink of water or a snack, do jumping jacks, whatever you need to do to feel energized and ready for the next 25-minute work period. Feeling stuck? No problem! We'll brainstorm some ideas for you to try to help you regain your focus and get back on track.

-When our break is over, I'll set another 25-minute timer for our last focused work period.

-During the last 5 minutes, we'll take another break, share our successes, and give everyone a virtual high-five for a job well done. Even if you didn't finish your project or assignment, that's okay too! We celebrate progress, not perfection.

As an ADHD coach, my passion is working with students of all ages to develop a greater sense of self-acceptance, confidence, and autonomy.
