Class Experience

Prerequisites:
Can count from 1 to 100
Can count in 2s (2, 4, 6, ...) (recommended, not required)
Having experience with or already knowing the "times tables" (is an asset but not required)

Topics:
What is multiplication
How counting in multiples is like multiplication
How to make multiplication easier and faster
What words are used when describing multiplication and how to understand questions about multiplication

Class Style:
Notes with fill-in blanks will be provided prior to class so that students may add to them, write their own notes, or not write anything down depending on how they are best able to learn and engage. This will be a participation-heavy class going over the basics of multiplying numbers one (1) through nine (9) then diving into the patterns of each number with a series of challenges. We will look at relating the patterns to meaningful examples for each learner, and practice going through them in different ways. We will discuss the language used in multiplication problems to build the basic skills for solving word problems.

Students will be expected to participate either by speaking, typing, or drawing. This is because the focus of developing and cementing an understanding and "number sense" for multiplication requires engagement with the material and the teacher to know where students are at in order to tailor the experience and questions.

A filled-in copy of the notes will be provided after class. It will include all content discussed, learner questions from the class, and more practice questions if learners would like to test their skills. The notes are designed to help students problem solve on their own to avoid "it was easy in class but is hard without the teacher" situations.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Understanding numbers is a super-power we can all develop through practice, and by having fun with it. A learner request for a "boot-camp style multiplication class" was the inspiration for doing a power hour - an engaging, quick-paced class to build and practice multiplication skills.
