Postcards for Preteens - Creating Memories and Connections Across the Miles

Physical distance doesn't have to equal social distance! This one-time class combines art and life-skills to help preteens create thumbprint art on postcards for friends or family members who are especially missed during this time.

Class Experience

Students will learn the importance - and fun - of communicating with others (in a non-technology-based way)! They will learn how they can use their thumb and fingerprints to create designs, and how those designs can become communication tools. The goals are to gain art-based skills that can be used as a launch point for communicating to friends and family and social skills that can be applied in peer and multi-generational situations.
There is no homework for this class - unless the learner desires to make more postcards! An adult's assistance may be needed to address postcards and acquire stamps after class.
The following supplies will be needed during class: 1. Scratch paper 2. A pen 3. A water-based (washable) ink pad (or pads) in your learner's color(s) of choice. (Please note that black ink pads are not recommended as it will be difficult to add visible details if using black ink). 4. Blank 5x7 index cards (or pre-cut card stock of equivalent size) 5. Wet wipes (or a damp wash cloth for wiping fingers)
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Ed Emberley's thumbprint books are frequently consulted for ideas.
