I will teach the origin and the history of the American flag. Students will learn what the colors represent and what the stars and stripes represent. They will learn how the American flag has changed over the course of American history. They will also learn a few basic etiquette rules when handling the American flag. As suggested in the title, I will be using several of my own postcards from my childhood postcard collection as visuals during this lesson. This will prompt discussion among the students and I will encourage them to share things they know or experiences they have had related to the American flag. I ask lots of questions when I teach, and I have found that this method often leads to healthy discussions and students asking questions as well. At the end of class, we will draw a very simple picture of the American flag on construction paper.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to tell what the colors, stars, and stripes represent on the American flag. They will be able to tell other facts or rules of etiquette about the American flag. They will learn how to draw a simple picture of the American flag.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello parents and students! I enjoy teaching Math and History to students of all ages as well as arts and crafts to younger children. I also have experience with Science and Health classes. I have taught two of my own children to read and write. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education with a History Major and a Math Minor. I taught in a private Christian school for six years before having my own children. I taught mostly 7th-12th graders at the private Christian school. I began homeschooling my own children in 2013. I taught two of my children at the preschool level through the 4th grade. Then in 2018, we made some adjustments and I began homeschooling my special needs daughter. I have not been trained in the field of special education, but I have learned so much in this field simply by observing my daughter and teaching her faithfully at home. I also have almost twenty years of experience with teaching elementary aged children in various church and Vacation Bible School classes. In the past, I have enjoyed doing crafts and art projects with my church classes and my own children at home. I believe that each class should be informative and structured. I want my students to be challenged but also to have fun during class. I have a sweet little dog named "Shiloh". He is a toy fox terrier/chihuahua mix, a designer breed often referred to as a taco terrier. He is the baby of our family and the ultimate lap dog! I look forward to meeting each of you in class very soon.
