Class Experience

In this class we will first explore techniques to draw pictures from photo references. I will take requests of what to draw, and then talk through the drawing process while answering questions from the class. Next we will use imagination and different brainstorming methods to alter, combine and repurpose the objects to create something new. Students may draw along with the me, or they may draw their own pictures. If students would like to share their drawings for assistance at any time or critique the 5th week that is encouraged, but not mandatory. I will be drawing digitally and sharing my screen for the sake of clarity; but the methods I use will mimic how I draw on paper with pencils, erasers and pens. Although every class will be 100% different and what we draw will be based purely on requests and input from the students, each week will have a theme:

Week1
Creatures

Week2
Exterior Locations

Week3
Characters

Week4
Interiors

Week5
Critiques (if students are interested) and discussion of how to put all the different elements together.

The class is somewhat based upon the Post-Apocalyptic art style found in video games, comics, movies and TV shows. I find this style very inspirational as an artist because it allows you to see things from a new perspective, find new uses for every day objects, imagine the ways that things can change and it just looks cool. This class has nothing to do with current events or politics and any hate speech or other negativity will result in immediate removal from class. Conversations about topics such as comic books, movies, video games and more will be accepted, but occasionally I will redirect the discussion toward drawing and art.

Students should have some basic drawing skills, but I am very good at working with learners at any level of their artistic development.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello everyone, my name is Dan Peck. I’ve been an art teacher for the past 13 years but I’ve been an artist pretty much all my life. I got my teaching degree from Miami University, but I also learned many valuable skills and techniques at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and I have studied painting with the world-renowned artist Alex Grey. I am interested in comic books, video games and hard-rock/heavy metal and I have an art style that reflects those interests. I am excited to share some of my knowledge and experience with learners who prefer a slight edge to their artwork.
