Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Students will be introduced to Edgar Allan Poe through a mini-biography and will then read and analyze two of his poems. Both poems will showcase the "lighter" side of Poe. Many people believe he only wrote poems & stories of a dark and macabre nature, but this class will show students the multi-faceted Edgar Allan Poe who really existed.

The two poems we will cover are "Eulalie" and "To Helen." We will analyze each poem and also look for and define poetic devices such as alliteration, assonance, consonance, repetition, enjambment, simile, metaphor, and more. We will discuss how these poetic devices add meaning to each poem.

I encourage student participation. I use slides to help engage the students. I offer students several opportunities to answer questions and share their thoughts.

There is no prior knowledge required.

Learning Goals

Students will learn:
1. how to analyze poetry.
2. how to identify & define several poetic devices.
