Portraits of Black Excellence: 4 Day Camp to Paint & Learn History (6-8 Yr Olds)
Class experience
During this 4 session craft camp, I will lead students in creating mixed media, pop-art paintings of notable Black historical figures. Each weekly session will focus on one person who has made significant contributions to American society in celebration of Black History Month. I will show the students how to create colorful, mixed media, pop art portraits in the likeness of each historical figure. Students will paint backgrounds with vibrant acrylic paint reminiscent of Andy Warhol's work....
Camp attendees will learn how to paint on canvas. Camp attendees will learn how to use vibrant colors and negative/positive space when painting pop art. Camp attendees will learn how to use diverse objects for texture. Camp attendees will learn how to create collages. Camp attendees will learn how various facts about the lives of Zora Neal Hurston, George Washington Carver, Shirley Chisholm and Malcolm X. Camp attendees will learn facts about American History. Camp attendees will learn the joy of crafting. Camp attendees will learn artistic expression skills. Camp attendees will work on fine motor skills.
I present my historical information on my experience as an African-American, my masters degree in social work where I am trained to handle and manage difficult situations and information. I have also taken undergraduate courses in African-American history. I have 10 years of professional experience working with primarily African-American populations in foster care which also equips me to handle delicate matters with professionalism and tact.

We will be covering historical figures throughout American history, in order to be accurate and give students a fuller understanding of the contributions made by these individuals, I will have to lightly address discrimination. I will do so in a very gentle and conscientious manner. My goal is to honor the memories of these individuals therefore, most of the focus will remain in the honoring. Additionally, parents should monitor the use of scissors. Acrylic paint (make sure the label says non-toxic) can stain so play clothing and covered surfaces are best. Parents may opt to use tempura paint for their little ones.
