In this class we will draw portraits of extraordinary women whilst learning about what made them such an important part of history. THE ART During the class we will focus on drawing the outline and features of the portrait as well as using contour lines to create movement. The method of drawing we will use is the grid method. The grid method of drawing allows you to produce an accurate line drawing by reducing your subject to a series of small squares. We will learn the skills and techniques needed to draw a realistic pencil portrait, from the initial outline to the subtle tones and textures used to finish the work. We will also work on mastering drawing features and offer guidance through the problems that we can meet when drawing them. We will talk about the proportion, helping us to understand the size, calculate the shape and position the features of a face and the body in our drawings. If there is time after the initial drawing stages we will then add shading. Learners are encouraged to share their final drawings in the classroom dashboard. For the reference image we will use a photograph displayed on the teacher’s tablet on her desk. THE WOMEN In this class we determine an extraordinary woman as one who is extremely driven and focused to achieve her goals while staying sincere, kind and compassionate. We have chosen women who have achieved remarkable things, sometimes against all odds, and are someone to inspire those who came after them to overcome obstacles and go for their dreams no matter how big they are! *Please note, the main focus of this class is drawing. A small time will be spent introducing the women before starting our drawing, when we will then focus on drawing techniques* **We will be teaching simple facts such as when they were born and died, discussing their upbringing, time in history and accomplishments** UPCOMING WEEKS W/c 27th February: Claudia Ruggerini (freedom fighter and neuropsychiatrist) W/c 6th March: Nina Simone (singer, songwriter and civil rights activist) W/c 13th March: Lily Parr (UK’s best ever soccer player of her generation and gay rights symbol) W/c 20th March: Rosa Parks (civil rights activist) CLASS STRUCTURE - Greeting - Introduction to the ‘Extraordinary Woman of the Week’ - Guided portrait drawing - Sharing of drawings/feedback - Closing/ Goodbye Every artist works at their own pace.
