Class Experience

This beginner-level portrait class is designed for young artists who are ready to start learning how to draw faces from the shoulders up, even if they’ve never tried before. We begin with simple shapes and easy-to-follow guides to understand the structure of the head, the placement of facial features, and how to build a portrait using basic drawing skills. Students will learn how to break the face down into manageable parts using proportion techniques like the center line and eye-line rules.

Students will explore simple techniques like sketching with construction lines, light pencil pressure, and beginner-friendly shading methods such as hatching and soft blending with fingers or blending tools.

This class builds a strong foundation and encourages students to develop observational skills and creative courage. By the end of the course, students will have completed several portraits and gained the tools to keep practicing on their own.

Skills and Techniques Covered:

Drawing basic head shapes and guidelines

Placing facial features accurately using proportion rules

Drawing simplified eyes, noses, mouths, and ears

Introduction to neck and shoulders

Light shading techniques for value

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Fine/Studio Arts from Elizabethtown College
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art with a concentration in Drawing and a Business Administration minor. Since 2017, I’ve been teaching both in schools and online, helping students grow as artists.

I specialize in black-and-white drawing, particularly with #2 pencils, drawing pencils, and charcoal, and I’ve written an 80-page paper on Renaissance techniques. I also teach color theory with crayons, colored pencils, pastels, and blending markers, and I can guide students in acrylic and watercolor painting.

Areas of Expertise:
Portraits & Figure Drawing – Understanding facial proportions, anatomy, and shading to create realistic drawings.

Dragons & Fantasy Creatures – Designing imaginative creatures with dynamic poses and textures.

Flowers (Especially Roses) – Drawing flowers with attention to detail, layering, and shading.

Still Life – Teaching students how to see and draw objects accurately, while practicing different shading techniques like cross-hatching and blending.

Mashables – A fun exercise where students combine two ideas (e.g., an animal and a fairy) to push their creativity and break away from realism.

I focus on teaching art fundamentals like composition, shape breakdown, and shading techniques. My classes are all about encouraging students to experiment, build their skills, and find their unique artistic voice.
