What's included
1 live meeting
1 in-class hoursClass Experience
During this class, we will start by learning the proportions of the face and talking about what portraits mean to us. We will draw along together as I show students the placement of different facial features. I'll discuss different tricks and tips for how to draw the face and how to customize it to look like you! As the class goes on, students will be able to ask me questions and get feedback on their artwork. I love to have fun while we draw and even talk a little art history while we're at it! This class is for any level! Beginners will get to learn the basics of drawing the face, while the more experienced artists will have a chance to practice their skills and learn some new techniques. These skills can be transferable to any other portrait artwork you do in the future!
Learning Goals
Students will be able to draw a self-portrait using proper proportions, line drawing, and shading in order to understand the fundamentals of portraiture drawing.
Other Details
Supply List
Paper (any white paper or pad that is at least 8.5 x11, to be safe I would have at least 5 pieces of paper), mirror (if not available you can use your computer or phone camera), a pencil, and an eraser. Optional: blending stump- you can find it any art store. Here's the link to Blick https://www.dickblick.com/products/tortillons/ You can check out Michaels or your local art store too. However, for this course, you can also use your fingers, but it's a fun tool to have if you are drawing a lot with pencils! If you are very uncomfortable with drawing your own face, just make sure you have a photo of someone else available. However, you can only draw the picture if it a high-quality portrait of someone from the front/close up. So NO candids, screenshots of Snapchat, or photos that are taken from far away. Ideally, you should be looking at a mirror but I know that this is not optimal for everyone
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Danielle and I am a K-12 certified art teacher in New York City! I received my BFA from Syracuse with a concentration in painting. I just recently received my MA in Art Education from Pratt Institute. I have been teaching high school level art as well as middle school and elementary levels. As an artist, I love experimenting and learning about different mediums such as painting, drawing, printmaking, illustration, sculpture, mixed media, digital media, and more. As a teacher, I am passionate about creating a learning environment in which all students' voices are valued and they are encouraged to express themselves through their artwork.
Here at Outschool, I will be teaching a variety of art classes with varying skill levels and mediums. I am excited to see my students' confidence grow as they learn new techniques and grow with the skills they already have! We'll keep it fun and learn some cool stuff in the process!
