Class will begin with a brief talk on what is a character with students volunteering some of their own favorite characters as examples. We’ll proceed to making our own character and answer questions to learn about the character: what is its name? personality? background? family? hobbies? strengths? weaknesses? etc. We will look at what challenges that character might face and how that could create a compelling story or affect a story already in progress. This is a fun activity for learning about how character affects plot. Class will involve lots of student discussion and interaction as students answer questions and brainstorm ideas for our character and the challenges that character might face. I will act as a guide, prompting students to continue asking questions and will record answers about our character (which will be made available after class). I will also answer any questions students have about characters.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about what a character is and how characters affect stories. They will know how to utilize a character questionnaire for coming up with story ideas, creating new characters, or fleshing out character ideas they already have.
In all my creative writing classes, the main goal is for students to learn confidence in their own writing and to enjoy writing creatively.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
I will guide discussion to make sure it is age appropriate. I will ask students for their favorite characters or to mention well-known characters. Land of Stories, Wings of Fire, and Percy Jackson are often mentioned.
I will ask students what challenges our character might face. At this age range, those challenges are often in the form of disagreements between friends, natural disasters, villages attacked by dragons, etc. Sometimes war, death of family members, peer pressure, etc. is mentioned.
Please contact me with any concerns before class (such as if your family prefers not to use examples from fantasy stories).
Supply List
Students may want paper and a writing utensil to jot down notes. After class, our character notes as well as a blank character questionnaire will be available so students may use what they learned for future projects.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
