Storytelling is an art form that requires creativity, concentration, imagination, and good communication skills. In this class, students will learn how to tell a story using ideas that just “pop” into their heads. They will tap into their creative side and co-create a story with other students. Prompts and transition words will be provided so that everyone can participate. The teacher will model a new oral story weekly and learners will complete a graphic organizer identifying the parts of the story before they embark on creating their own. While having fun and enjoying this engaging and interactive activity, students will learn about narrative structure, study story elements, use colloquial language, practice active listening skills, and create original and unique stories. Students will be introduced to “Give Me 5” steps to active listening. Listening is a critical skill in all aspects of life, and this skill will be honed in this oral storytelling class. Each week, students will create new stories and will continue to perfect this skill.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about the history of oral tradition, story structure, and how to tell a story.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Non-US Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello, my name is Neda, but my students call me Mrs. Topic. I love to teach Language Arts, especially reading and writing. I am a licensed elementary school teacher in Canada. In my 25 years of teaching in public schools, I have taught all subjects from Kindergarten to grade 6, but I am certified to teach K-10. I have Specialist qualifications in Special Eduction and ESL, and I have taught ESL for many years. I have a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Ottawa.
Over the course of my career, I have received numerous awards for excellence in teaching, including the Director of Education Commendation and the Ministry of Education ESL/Kindergarten Lead teacher. I am a lifelong learner, and I strive to foster a passion for and a love of learning in my students. I believe that the key to education is the joy of discovery. Children have different learning styles and require differentiation to meet with success in school. It is my goal to provide my students with a well rounded education through an emphasis on academic excellence.
I am married and the mother of 4 adult children, and a grandmother of 5. My life has always been blessed with the laughter of children. In addition to spending time with family, I love to walk, travel, read, paint, and play with my grandkids.
I look forward to teaching your children at Outschool.
