Class Experience

US Grade 3
Get the popcorn popping! Students will be allowed to bring their favorite popcorn flavor to class and munch along as we read passages designed for a third-grade level. This class will focus on students learning to comprehend what they read in a fun environment. Students will read a portion of the passage and when the teacher yells out popcorn another student will be picked to continue reading. Each student will be given an opportunity to read out loud. After the passage is finished, students will answer comprehension questions that consist of matching, multiple-choice, or fill in. We will review all answers together. Students will read a mix of fiction and non-fiction stories each week. Students will read the following fiction reading passages for the first four weeks of class: Week #1 Jan 3 "Closet Creature", Week #2 Jan 10 "Time Capsule", Week #3 Jan 17 "Ben's Loose Tooth", and Week #4 Jan 14 "The Strange Star". In addition, throughout the class students will try to fill the teacher's popcorn bucket by reading sight words from the Dolch word list each class. All passages are written for a third-grade level. This class is designed for students who read at a third-grade level. However, the class is not limited to students in the third grade. All advanced second-grade readers or fourth grade students who may need to review are welcome to sign up. Passages will be posted to the classroom the night before for students to print out. It is best for students to have a copy of the reading material in front of them. It makes it easier to read and follow along if they have their own copy of the passage. Although, I understand that not all students may have access to a printer, so please don't let printing issues prevent your student from joining the class. I always post the reading passage on my screen during class. Students should bring the passage, a pencil, and some delicious popcorn to class. Don't be afraid to get creative with those popcorn flavors!
