Class Experience

US Grade 2
Get the popcorn popping! Students will be allowed to bring their favorite popcorn flavor to class and munch along as we read passages designed for a second grade level. This class will focus on students learning to comprehend what they read in a fun environment. Students will read a portion of the passage and the teacher will yell out popcorn and immediately pick another student to continue reading. Each student will be given an opportunity to read out loud. After the passage is finished, students will answer comprehension questions that consist of matching, multiple choice, or fill in. We will review all answers together. In addition, throughout the class students will try to fill the teacher's popcorn bucket by reading sight words from the Dolch word list each class. All passages are written for a second grade level. This class is designed for students who read at a second grade level. However, the class is not limited to students in second grade. All advance first grade level students or third grade students who may need to review are welcome to sign up. Passages will be posted to the classroom the night before for students to print out. It is best for students to have a copy of the reading material in front of them. It makes it easier to read and follow along if they have their own copy of the passage. Although, I understand that not all students may have access to a printer, so please don't let printing issues prevent your student from joining the class. I can always post the reading passage on my screen during class. Students should bring the passage, a pencil, and some delicious popcorn to class. Don't be afraid to get creative with those popcorn flavors! In addition to snacks, students may bring one item to share with peers at the end of class. Items may include but are not limited to books, toys, pictures, or pets.
Learning Goals
The goal is for students to become more comfortable reading out loud and participating in classroom discussions. Hopefully, students can become closer to achieving the ultimate goal of learning to comprehend what they read.
