Learners will read aloud through a series of comprehension stories and passages. They will call on another learner in the classroom to continue reading as they and other readers follow along. Learners will focus on a unique reading genre each week and key learning objectives for acquiring reading comprehension skills and strategies. 🎓 This course is perfect for learners who want to improve their reading fluency and comprehension skills and develop greater confidence in interpreting the text through our weekly strategies effectively. Learners may join the journey toward reading comprehension mastery at any time, pause when needed, and resume the course again! 😁🖱🖌️💻🔌We'll meet weekly for fun and interactive classes where we'll complete activities to help us understand and apply our weekly reading comprehension strategies. In this comprehension class, learners will explore an excerpt from CS Lewis's novel The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. Learners will collaboratively read and analyze the characters to generate ideas, organize information, and use strategies to sequence the plot. This fantasy fiction lesson will encourage students to develop critical thinking skills and improve their ability to understand and analyze the development of characters.

Lesson 2:
A biography of Ellen Ochoa
We will delve into the extraordinary life of Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic woman in space. This reading comprehension session presents her biography, followed by a series of questions to test learners' understanding and sharpen their skills in inference, text evidence, vocabulary, and summarization. Plus, learners will craft graphic organizers and summaries. You won't want to miss this engaging journey!

Lesson 3:
Poetry by Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost
In this lesson, we will review selected poetry pieces by Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost to analyze their intended audiences, patterns in structure, and literal and figurative meaning. We will incorporate learning tools to understand poem features, varied sentence structure, rhyming lines and meter, and syllabic beats while reading "The Moon" by Emily Dickinson and "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. By discussing and analyzing, we will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of poetry.

Lesson 4:
Expository Reading on Space Exploration
In this class, we will read a non-fiction expository passage and analyze its text features, such as organization, flow, and point of view. We will focus on understanding the central claim, supporting readings, evidence, counterpoints, and rebuttals to gain a deeper understanding of the informative topic. The lesson will include literature from an anonymous point of view on funding space exploration.

Parental Guidance
The resources for lessons incorporate critical analysis of the problematic content shared about the global history of marginalized groups as a key learning goal that informs learners of these issues. We will collectively discuss education, opportunities, and civil rights among these groups from an academic, no-bias perspective. Learners will view weekly lessons and activities through a screen-shared presentation via Canva Slides.
Pre-Requisites
Learners should be reading at a minimum Lexile level of 800 to get the most out of this course.
