Grab your popcorn and bring it to class! We will have a blast learning to think and analyze literature, all while munching on snacks. ๐๐๐๐ซ๐ง๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ: โ increase their ability to think abstractly. โ increase their reading comprehension. โ prepare for state exams and school entrance exams. โ prepare themselves for middle school and high school analytical reading. โ have an absolute blast in class. โ learn essential aspects of literary analysis. โ begin an honors-level track of English. Some people claim to be "concrete thinkers." That may be true, but did you know that you can train your brain to think and understand abstract ideas? On state assessments and entrance exams for private schools, If they haven't been taught explicitly how to do this, they struggle, and their reading scores reflect that gap in their learning. This class aims to solve that problem and learners will train their brains to understand the abstract by studying the the elements of literary analysis. Critical thinkers are independent, solution-oriented people who understand themselves and the world in which they live. They solve problems, set and meet goals, are creative, make better decisions, communicate effectively, reflect, form reasoned opinions and judgments, and are more equipped to have success in school, work, and life. Metacognition, or thinking about thinking, can be taught! And these skills are more easily acquired if the learning tasks are interesting to kids. This is why we will use film clips in this class. As a bonus, students learn concepts that build a foundation for literary analysis. This class prepares students to analyze literature and talk about books using the same devices they learn from watching film. Direct teaching on literary analysis Watch a short sketch, commercial, or scene from a film. Analysis, evaluation, and synthesis to form opinions and arguments. **Film clips are taken from Disney, Pixar, commercials, and other movies.** ๐ ๐๐๐๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐๐ง๐ญ: It takes 39 weeks to cover all of the concepts listed in the syllabus. Students who take this class and then discuss literature with our reading teachers in other classes have an advantage with their solid foundation of critical thinking and understanding of literary analysis to discuss literature. We follow best practices in designing class time, assignments, and routines. According to Pennington Publishing, effective writing feedback (or grading) is: โข Specific, not general โข Immediate, not postponed โข Routine with a revision / feedback cycle โข Explanatory โข The right amount โข Targeted to the most critical issues โข Varied (written, audio, and video comments) โข Holding students accountable
