US Grade 3 - 6
Pop some popcorn and come to class with a great book! Snuggle up while students participate in a book discussion and review. Students will read a novel on their own and come to class prepared to discuss the book. During the first two class meetings using the socratic circle method will be used. That means students will lead the discussion by asking and answering each other's questions, facilitated by me. Prior to class, students will write two open ended questions (no yes or no questions) to ask the class that will lead the discussion of the book. Before the last meeting, students should watch the movie. Students will then share their thoughts on the movie in comparison to the book. My rule of thumb is that students should always read the book first and then watch the movie. Of course students are encouraged to bring popcorn or another preferred snack to class to enjoy. Ideas for discussion include the following, but not limited to, these key reading standards: Character Analysis and Development Identifying story elements Problem/Solution Point of View Cause and Effect Main Ideas and supporting details Making Predictions Summarizing Visualizing Making Inferences Making Connections Asking higher Level Questions Note: Students must have a copy of the book and read the assigned chapters before the next class. The teacher and the students will discuss the assigned chapters during each session. Discussions will include open ended questions, answers, and ideas about the book. I encourage a high level of student participation and engagement while I act as the facilitator in the discussion. Students must come to class ready to share thoughts and ideas. Every student will be given time to share. Students should come ready to learn and have a fantastic time! My teaching style includes a fun and engaging way to read and discuss one of my favorite novels of all time! No required experience is needed. The following schedule is the timeline for each meeting. Students must read the assigned chapters before the start of the next class in order to be prepared for the discussions and activities. Chapters will not be read in class together. Class 1- Discuss chapters 1-9 Class 2- Discuss chapters 10-17 Class 3- Compare and contrast the book and the movie The socratic circle reference handout will be provided upon enrollment. The movie "The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe" can be watched on Amazon Prime and Disney Plus.
