US Grade 9 - 12

* Important: Due to the discussion-based and interactive nature of the class, cameras are required to be kept on for the duration of class. Thank you!

As we approach Halloween/Spooky Season, more people tend to have questions about the nature of reality. In this class, students will learn about the academic branch of philosophy known as metaphysics and philosophically chat with each other about questions, ideas, theories, and/or stories relating to the nature of reality.

Seasonal and academic!

*If there is interest, this class can be repeated multiple times with new explorations or a club can be formed.

This class will cover:

- What is metaphysics as a branch of the academic discipline of philosophy?

- Terms and concepts explored: epistemology, objective vs. subjective truth, role of open-mindedness + critical thinking, role of reliable evidence, caution of fallacies, role of technology.

This class is teacher-guided and moderated but also learner-led, so students will be asked to explore together what areas interest them when it comes to questioning the nature of reality by sharing stories, experiences, questions, or theories.

Some concepts in metaphysics are such things as the nature of time and space, consciousness, existence, the self, free will, foreknowledge, dream experiences, mind-body problem, unexplained phenomena...

                ...and more!

Parental Guidance
I do not plan to share any media, but this class will allow for the free exchange of ideas from the learners. Therefore, parents can decide if the open-discussion nature of the class is a good fit for their young learner(s). Additional Important Note: While all discussions will always be moderated in a way to keep examples and views relevant, appropriate, and in line with Outschool's policies, due to the nature of this particular class, some stories, questions, or theories shared by others could be considered "scary" to some which is why the class age is set for older teens. Please consider the nature of your learner and their sensitivities when it comes to this before enrollment. Thanks! :)
