In this fun class, students will look at age-appropriate artwork created by the famous artist Keith Haring. We will dissect his style, and discuss what makes a painting identifiable as a Haring and unique from other artists. In particular, his bold, abstract, outline drawing of figures and objects—as well as his use of bright colors—will be examined. Then, students will create a drawing of their own in Keith Haring's style using their observations of his art: Time will be set aside for the students to complete a base drawing (bold outlines of figures, setting, and any possible objects the students may have thought up) and, depending on the student's progress, fill in the drawing with color and details. The students will be shown six posed "action" photos (of me!) to base their figures on, although they can also use their imagination to create unique scenes. Finally, no matter what their level of completion, each student will share their drawing near the end of the class! Some students may draw faster than others, and that's okay—students will have at least enough time to create a base drawing that they can fill in with color and details after class if need be.
