Polymer Clay: Underwater Coral Reef
Class experience
In this one hour and thirty five minute class we will use a polymer oven bake clay, such as Fimo or Sculpy, to make an underwater coral reef, complete with a swimming fish. As always, I will show step by step directions and discuss what I am doing. We will begin by making an 'island', and then proceed to come up with creative ways to make coral, while practicing some fun and different techniques with clay. The fish will be last, and will be attached with the wire in order to appear like they...
Whenever working with projects such as these the focus is always on the process, but there is plenty of problem solving involved as well.

The students will need the following: * Sculpy or Fimo clay in a variety of colors, the colors are subjective and are up to the student. I usually use beige for sand, and then multiple bright colors for coral and the fish, black and white for small details such as stripes and eyes. * Wire, I use 18 gauge aluminum craft wire from a local craft store. * My wire is soft enough to cut with scissors, but in case it is not, jewelry wire cutters that are safe and easy to use. * Basic clay tools. In the absence of the tools, a toothpick, or a large plastic sewing needle will work for most things. * Masking tape to prevent the fish from sliding on the wire. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have about the materials. I am happy to provide links or photos of the materials upon request.
Dear parents, please note! It is essential that the learners have the right supplies for this project. Without proper materials the results may not be the same! Please make sure the learners have the items necessary for the success of this project! Note to learners and parents, please be sure to follow instructions when baking the clay. The temperatures for this kind of clay is often quite low (around 250 degrees), and is stated on the clay box or wrapper. This project is one hour and a half, and we will be sculpting the entire time! Please note, I am happy to hold a class if there is only one student enrolled. I do my best to reach out ahead of the class and make sure that's alright with students and parents.
