Class Experience

NOTE: Students may use air dry clay if they prefer not to use polymer bake clay, but then they cannot use their Fairy/Gnome Door outside.

In this course, we will work together to learn the steps needed to create each portion of our clay creations. Different camera views will be used to show each step of the way. We will condition, cut, roll and form our pieces. Then we will assemble our parts and get them prepared to be baked after class is over. The supplies are listed below and are necessary to complete the projects. I will go over how to lacquer the clay after baking if the students want a professional, glossy finished and durable piece. Students will personalize their creations to look however they wish after the basic structures are complete!

Each day, we will sculpt at least one piece for the collection, including:
Fairies / Gnomes
Doorway
Add-Ons
Garden accessories

Supplies Needed to complete the projects:
Polymer Bake Clay (any brand you prefer, for reference I use Sculpey Primo) You will only need a few 2oz. bricks total, we work tiny!
Basic Sculpting tools, toothpick or pointed tool, small rolling pin or paintbrush handle, cutting tool
A Baking sheet covered with parchment paper (don’t bake directly on it)
A non stick surface to work on
Variety of colors of polymer clay (including a skin tone) Translucent may be used in wings also.
A few toothpicks cut in half OR jewelry wire pins for structure
Any Glass or Metal findings, such as glass marbles and anything with an interesting texture
You may incorporate real pebbles or natural stone pieces as well

OPTIONAL, but highly recommend:
Clear Glaze or Polyurethane for protection
If you have a medium sized planter pot, we will create the home space in it and attach the door to the front. It may be filled with gravel, dirt, pebbles, etc.

**Polymer clay requires baking according to the package direction. (Generally ~275 °F, depending on your brand of clay). You may do this after class. Parental help is necessary.

If students miss a day, the recording will be available in the classroom for them to create on their own time.
