US Grade 7 - 10
This five-week class will have a dual-component approach. Each week we will revise pieces while researching markets and possibly submitting. Learners will be expected to have submitted a current piece of work of up to five pages (or 1250 words), to the teacher before the first class to use as a starting point. Learners can choose to work on flash fiction, short stories, poetry, or essays. Component one: In the first class we will talk about what is necessary for a piece to be polished...
Students will learn and practice the skills needed to prepare a piece for market, as well as analyze and learn how to submit to individual markets.
I have been a literary magazine editor-in-chief for seven years, and I have been published in a wide variety of markets.
Homework Offered
A minimum of an hour a week should be spend on writing, revising and/or submitting, but it is up to students how much time they will devote to a piece of writing. While we will be researching markets, it will also be up to the students to do any actual submitting outside of class. Students will be asked to send the teacher the piece they are working on ahead of class each week for feedback afterwards.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Grades Offered
Notebook/paper and pencil/pen. A handout will be given each class for reference, but printing it is optional. A word processor and internet access will be necessary outside of class.
While we will be submitting to markets that are appropriate for teenagers, there are a wide variety of subjects that teens write about, and all magazine content cannot be screened ahead of time.
