Class Experience

In this small, weekly class, students will work on creating a unique sketchbook featuring their favorite Pokemon. It's a drawing class that goes a few steps further - after we sketch and color our character(s), we will create decorative backgrounds, borders, and/or environments using a variety of artistic styles and media. Soon, students will be filling pages with work that not only brings a more joyful connection to their favorite Pokemon, but that also helps them develop their unique artistic storytelling style and voice.

Each week we will focus on a different type, working our way through all 18 over the course of several months. Each class will present the opportunity to draw at least one character and decorate one page - more if time and student interest allow! Students are always welcome to share their requests, as long as they fit under that week's type.

Week of July 26: Psychic Types
(class will not meet August 2nd or 9th)
Week of August 16 : Bug Types
Week of August 23 : Rock Types
Week of August 30 : Dark Types
Week of September 6 : Dragon Types
Week of September 13 : Steel Types

We will finalize our choice of specific Pokemon to draw in class, and I will guide them as we work while also brainstorming different themes, colors, and motifs that our "type" calls to mind. For Water Type week, for example, we might create a border of waves or incorporate some watercolor painting. For Fire Type week, we'll use lots of warm shades like red and orange. I encourage students to bring a variety of art supplies to class and mix and match however they'd like - this can create fun, unexpected results and get kids thinking outside the box with their designs. Crayons and colored pencils layered with paint pens, watercolor and glitter glue, washi tape and origami paper...it's all welcome here!

My teaching style is very relaxed and laid-back. I love to chat while I work, and I purposely keep my classes small so that children can feel free to chat and share as they work too, if they wish.

Students do not need to have any prior experience.

Learning Goals

After this class, students will have a greater understanding of how to draw Pokemon; they will also understand how to create smaller, more decorative drawings that support their main subject. They will have a keepsake sketchbook that represents not only their favorite Pokemon, but also their own artistic experiments and innovations.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi everyone! I'm Jaime Bramble Schell, owner of Bramble Schell Studio, where I specialize in creating fine art collages, illustrations, and surface pattern design. I think that empowering children to discover and expand their own artistic voices is one of the greatest gifts we can give them. My classes strive to not only guide kids in creating works of art, but to also teach them aspects of relevant art history, color theory, and design principles that will help them identify their unique styles. I'm also a little chatty, so you can go ahead and un-mute yourself in my class. When I'm not creating art, I am working as a freelance copywriter, trying out new gluten-free recipes, riding my bike, or hanging around with my family - my husband and 8-year-old twins!
