Pokémon Science: A Study of Sea Life
Explore the wide variety of marine life found both in the ocean and in the Pokémon anime world, including fish, coral, sea stars, crustaceans, worms, octopi, sharks, eels, jellyfish, and more. This self-paced course has 3 main lessons.
Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 12
This course includes a wide variety of sea creatures, and a few freshwater fish, too! We'll explore their characteristics and compare them to their Pokémon counterparts. We'll also learn a bit about how the complexities of classifying such a wide variety of underwater organisms. Please note, marine mammals (such as whales) and marine reptiles (such as sea turtles) are not included in this course, but are instead discussed in the Pokémon mammal and reptile classes I offer. Week 1Lesson 1Introduction, FishHow do scientists study and classify aquatic life? What is taxonomy? We'll answer these questions and start to explore our first Phyla of marine life, called the Phylum Chordata, and the Pokémon inspired by these fishy creatures.Week 2Lesson 2Fish and MolluscsIn this lesson, we'll learn about some unique sea creatures from the Phylum Chordata that we don't often think of as "fish," such as seahorses, rays, sharks, and eels. We'll also explore the Phylum Mollusca, including octopi and snails. (And of course we'll compare all of these real-life creatures to their Pokémon counterparts!)Week 3Lesson 3More Sea LifeThis lesson includes Phylum Cnidaria (coral, jellyfish), Phylum Annelida (tube worms), Echinodermata (star fish, sea urchin), and Phylum Arthropoda (crabs, lobsters), and the many Pokémon inspired by them.Week 4Lesson 4BonusThis small bonus lesson includes more aquatic Pokémon not included in the recordings, and a "Make your own Pokémon" project based on a sea creature. There is no video recording for this lesson.
