IMPORTANT: Due to low enrollments in the live classes, I encourage you to consider taking the “flex” version of this class. It contains the same content and can be taken on a flexible schedule. What’s more, I offer a “pay what you can” discount for all flex classes! Just sign up for the class and then send a message requesting your preferred discount. ▬▬▬▬▬▬ COURSE SUMMARY ▬▬▬▬▬▬

This short course explores the culture, science, and mythology of Hawaii and its people, by comparing it to the fictional region of Alola in the Pokemon universe. Students will also get to try their hand at creating their own Pokemon based on a mythical character from Hawaiian mythology; we will present our Pokemon at the beginning of the second week.

▬▬▬▬▬▬ COURSE OUTLINE ▬▬▬▬▬▬

Week 1:
♦ Introduction: the most obvious similarities between Alola and Hawaii
♦ Which island is which? A comparison of the four major islands of Hawaii and Alola.
♦ Similarities in Hawaiian culture and Alolan culture: hula, fire knife dancing, leis, water sports, importance of volcanoes
♦ Characters from Hawaiian mythology and their Pokemon equivalents: Lono, Kanaloa, Kāne, Kūkaʻilimoku, Nightmarchers, Menehune, Pele, Pe’ape’a-make-walu, and Mo’o.
♦ Four mythical characters from Hawaiian mythology that would make excellent Pokemon.

Week 2 :
♦ Student presentations
♦ Introduction to the animals and plants of Hawaii.
♦ Invasive vs. Native species of Hawaii, and how that relates to the Pokemon world.
♦ Pokemon based on Invasive species of Hawaii: Rattata/Raticate, Yungoos/Gumshoos, Caterpie/Butterfree, Kecleon, Crawdaunt, Rowlet/Dartrix, Buzzwole, Alolan Meowth
♦ Pokemon based on Native species of Hawaii: Exeggutor, Popplio/Brionne, Crabrawler, Parasect, Spinarak, Staryu, Bruxish, Alomomola, Mantine, Oricorio, Decidueye

▬▬▬▬▬▬ SCHEDULE REQUESTS ▬▬▬▬▬▬

I create my entire teaching schedule based on schedule requests, so if you don't see a time that works for you, please put in a request! However, I can only teach live classes from 9 AM to 4 PM Arizona time. If you'd like to take the class outside of this time frame, perhaps the "flex class" version would work for you.
