Class Experience

Join Pikachu, Ash Ketchum, and other Pokemon friends (and foes) for this exciting "Around the World" adventure! Pokemon lovers will enjoy this class that features fun, unforgettable STEM challenges, engaging puzzles, and silly activities.

In this class, you can expect:

1) A personal introduction/one-on-one chat time with your teacher, serving as an icebreaker with a question like "Who is your favorite Pokemon?"  This allows any latecomers or anyone experiencing technical difficulties the opportunity to hop in without missing anything;
2) An interactive exercise that encourages Pokemon masters to shake their sillies out (easy for anyone to do and will not be strenuous);
3) A teamwork mission with mini STEM challenges and puzzles that allow all learners to travel virtually with Ash and Pikachu around various locations in the world, including:

- Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska, United States
- Legoland, Carlsbad, California, United States
- London, England, United Kingdom
- Cebu, Philippines
- Tongariro, New Zealand

(A note: In the interest of authenticity, cultural sensitivity, and accuracy, I want to assure all families that I have visited every single one of these places above and have exercised extensive research to ensure that I am representing these regions and cultures appropriately. Families can expect to see mostly landmarks and foods incorporated in a fictional Pokemon challenge and learners will not be expected to have prior knowledge of these areas nor will they be quizzed on these locations. Instead, this challenge serves as a fun way to promote a more global understanding of the world around them by using a fun, popular theme!)

No experience is required! If learners have a basic foundation of first generation Pokemon, it will be helpful. Even if they do not know the names of most of the Pokemon, they will still enjoy interacting and solving puzzles. The class will be structured with an introduction and ice breaker question so that each child has a chance to speak, followed by a challenge to follow along digitally. I want to give all students an opportunity to speak at least once and my goal is to engage all students by having them move their bodies throughout the lesson (serving as "brain breaks") instead of having them sitting and staring at the screen while I talk for 30 minutes. You will be pleased with my gentle but energetic, positive and animated teaching style. We will interact through a combination of question and answer, games, and discussion. I ask that all students come with excitement to learn and respectfulness for other students.

The classroom environment is intended to be fun, interactive, engaging, and a way for learners to meet other Pokemon fans with whom they can connect and socialize. Because I am facilitating an informal class, learners will not be expected to mute the entire time. I will only ask learners to mute if any background noise takes away from the classroom experience.

All learners are expected to speak appropriately, engage positively, and of course, HAVE FUN!

Please note that the students get VERY EXCITED in this class and it is not a quiet class. Because the class is so short, I allow them to let their little personalities shine through. :)

Learning Goals

Families can expect to see mostly landmarks and foods incorporated in a fictional Pokemon challenge and learners will not be expected to have prior knowledge of these areas nor will they be quizzed on these locations. Instead, this challenge serves as a fun way to promote a more global understanding of the world around them by using a fun, popular theme! Learners will also leave with a sense of accomplishment that they completed a mission as a team! Learners will hone their deductive reasoning skills and practice teamwork.

Parental Guidance
Because there is physical movement involved, please have your child stretch prior to the class. For safety, please be sure there is enough open space for your child to stretch his or her arms out wide, jump up and down, and run in place. I recommend having water close by to stay hydrated, but rest assured knowing that physical movement will not be exhaustive and will not take up the entire duration of the class. As you know your child best, please prepare for this class as you would any other physical activity to ensure he or she is safe and to ensure you are limiting injury. Thank you! **Update: Parents, please note that the students get VERY EXCITED in this class and it is not a quiet class. Because the class is so short, I allow them to let their little personalities shine through. :)
