Poetry Writing: Learn to Write a "Kindku"
Class experience
US Grade 5 - 8
The Kindku is an invitation to promote kindness, positivity, and inspiration through poetry. As the last two letters of the name indicate, it is based on Japanese poetry forms like the haiku and tanka. Kindku was created by Cendrine Marrouat and David Ellis, two artists who believe in the power of A.R.T. (Actions Rally Thoughts) to make the world a better place. In the first session of this four-week class, I'll demonstrate the form and together we'll write a kindku in class. For weeks 2-4,...
- Students will learn how to follow a set of rules to produce an uplifting poem, harnessing their natural creativity and warmth. - Students will gain practice presenting something they've created. - Students will learn how to be supportive of others.
I've been a certified teacher for over 30 years, including being the founder of a progressive middle & high school in Seattle (in 1994). I have a warm way of engaging with students who typically come away feeling cared for after attending one of my classes. I love helping students build social-emotional skills, and I love using poetry to do it!
Homework Offered
Students are expected to write three kindku poems, one between session 1 & 2 of the class, one between sessions 2 & 3, and one between sessions 3 & 4. This will require them to pick a source for the poem and follow the rules for this poetry form.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
