I have been an early childhood educator for 35 years. My teaching experiences and professional development training have helped me build a treasure chest of ideas, materials and methods to guide children through the writing process. My area of expertise is integrating children’s literature and poetry across the curriculum. For example, kicking off a science unit on life cycles by reading Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a great way to spark interest. Reading any of Jack Prelutsky’s poems will bring children to giggles… a wonderful introduction for a grammar lesson on parts of speech. Children develop confidence in their writing abilities when given the time and guidance to listen to their own words. They begin to understand that changing those words (revising) makes their writing more interesting. Providing individual attention is important for student success.
There is no homework assigned for this class. Learners will be encouraged to continue writing poems when inspiration strikes them!
