Class Experience
This one-week camp includes 5 sessions in which the learner will listen to 4 poems by US Poet Laureate Joy Harjo. Learners will love learning about the life of Joy Harjo and will enjoy her poems, which are suitable for teen audiences. Joy Harjo is a member of the Mvskoke Nation. Her poems encourage young people to to think about the history in North America and reflect on family, nature, and our ancestors. Joy Harjo's poems have many important lessons to teach. - Learners will be able to read a poem with expression. - Learners will be able to ask questions during discussions about the poem and its author. - Learners will be able to respond to the poem by drawing and/or writing their own poem or journal entry. - Learners will read a short biography about U.S. poet laureate Joy Harjo.
I have a Masters in Literature from Middlebury College, where I have studied diverse perspectives represented in poetry. I live in Juneau where the illustrator, Michaela Goade is from and I have studied Tlingit art, language and culture.
Students can complete an artistic response to a poem by Joy Harjo. Students can choose to write a journal response to Joy's poems or may choose to write their own poem.
- Drawing and writing paper. - Art materials of the students' choice.
- Students will be assessed by their questions during class discussions. - They will also be assessed by their response to Joy Harjo's poetry.
4 hours 10 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
