Description
Class Experience
In my 3+ years on Outschool, I've taught poetry to hundreds of students -- and I have learned immeasurably from them. Young people have a unique view of poetry, so I love being able to hear their reactions to poems. I am a former reporter/editor with a background in writing. I hold degrees in French literature and journalism from UNC-Chapel Hill.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Parents, be advised that the Maya Angelou poem contains references to sexiness in the line "Does my sexiness upset you?" as well as other veiled sexual references. While Angelou's life story included abuse at the hands of men, this will be referred to as mistreatment in class. It's not to diminish her experience but out of respect to parents who may not be comfortable with class discussion of sexual abuse. Finally, the discussion of the poets' lives will touch, at times, on civil rights (Hughes) and the British occupation of India (Kipling).
