Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
This class will focus on allowing children an opportunity to present their written art in an oral reading. It will also provide time to socialize with peers. Students will share their name, the state they are from, and and their own poem to share with the other students in the class. Students will be encouraged to ask the writers questions such as: What inspired the writing of this poem? How long have you been writing poetry and why do you like it? students will be encouraged to ask their own questions and offer praise to peers. Student talk time 3-7 minutes depending on class size.

The teacher may also ask questions such as did you include any symbolism, imagery, or focus on a particular theme in your work?
Prior knowledge of symbolism and theme are encouraged, but time can be spent to explain these terms. Please let me know in an email prior to class if symbolism, imagery, or theme are new concepts for your child.

Please remind your child to be open minded and kind to peers. Even if others have opinions different than our own we should treat each other with respect. My classroom is a place where students can share their work without fear or intimidation.

Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate in Secondary Education
I am a certified English teacher. I believe in making learning accessible to students. Some students believe that poetry is too difficult to understand. I believe any student can understand and appreciate poetry with enough time, patience, and guidance. I strongly believe the best way to explore literature is in a relaxed discussion not in a rigid class.
