Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
In this fun, hands on, interactive class, we will learn all about poetry! Each day, students will listen to poetry, learn about a literary device used in poetry, and write poetry! I'm hoping they will come to love poetry as much as me.
Here is a break down of each day:

Day 1: We will talk about what poetry is, listen to many fun, engaging poems and then learn about the literary device, "alliteration." We will then try to use alliteration as we write acrostic poems, using the students' names. Homework will be to create more poems or to find a poem to share.

Day 2: We will again listen to lots of poems, sharing any poems that the students created or found as homework. We will then talk about "metaphors" and "similes." We will try to use these literary devices as we learn about haiku poetry and then write haikus of our own. Homework will be to create "found" poems, using old magazines or newspapers from home.

Day 3: We will share our poems and then learn about "rhyme." We will then use rhyme as we learn about limericks and then write limericks of our own. Homework will be to create color poems.

Day 4: Again, we will listen to poems, including the ones that the students created for homework. Then we will learn all about the literary device, "onomatopoeia." Students will use onomatopoeia in the odes that they will write in class. Homework will be to get ready for our poetry slam celebration tomorrow!

Day 5: This is the day that we celebrate all of us as poets! After doing a few activities, we will have a poetry slam of our own. Students can choose poems of their own or famous poems to read aloud and perform. It will be a celebration of poetry!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Lydia, and I love children and teaching! I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from Muhlenberg College in 1995. At the same time, I received my Elementary Education certificate. I could not wait to teach! I began my career teaching middle school Spanish and then went on to teach 4th grade. My favorite subject to teach was always literature. I love children's literature! I stopped teaching in order to raise my four children (2 sets of twins!). I then went back to work as a children's librarian, which I loved. And now I am teaching at a play based Quaker preschool which is a delightful place to spend my mornings! I believe that learning should be fun and hands on. I feel that getting kids excited about a subject is how real learning takes place. Let's have fun learning together!
