Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
•	This course will include an overview of the Romantic Period and a study of the poems of William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Robert Burns.
•	We will cover each poet for two class sessions
•	Poetry should be fun, and I will encourage the students to read the poems aloud. It will include discussions of the themes and structures of the poems. (Just what is Iambic Pentameter?)
•	When teaching poetry, I encourage discussion and comments. Poems are meant to be heard, and we will focus on reading aloud, emphasizing the rhymes and rhythms and musical qualities of the poems.
•	We will also listen to some rock music. Some bands have adapted these poems into their songs.
•	The class will also cover the Scots dialect Robert Burns used. Students will have fun reading lines like, “Wee, sleeket, cowran, tim’rous beastie, O, what a panic’s in thy breastie! Thou need na start awa sae hasty, Wi’ bickerin brattle!”

Hello! I have been an English teacher at the university, high school, and middle school levels since 2006. My experience includes teaching college composition, rhetoric, and business communication as an adjunct professor; Advanced Placement Language and Composition, Advanced Placement Literature, British Literature, and ninth grade English honors at a high school; and the past nine years focusing on improving reading and writing skills as a sixth-grade English teacher at a high performing private school.

Prior to teaching, I earned an MA in English Language Arts Education, and before that, I served in the U.S. Air Force for twenty years as a public affairs specialist (journalist).

I became a teacher because I love working with students and helping them learn. I've always enjoyed reading and writing, so teaching these subjects was a good fit for me. I believe being able to read well and write effectively are important in life, and I always do my best to help my students develop.

In my spare time, I enjoy getting together with my grandchildren,, going sailing, and playing the bagpipes.

I have also written four novels.
