Express Yourself #4: Themed Topics, Diverse Poetry & Social-Emotional Reflection
Poetry Discussions: Contemporary Poets of Color (for Older Students)
Class experience
US Grade 9 - 12
Calling all poets and poetry-lovers! Ready to step into the awesome world of contemporary poetry? This class is all about diving headfirst into the incredible world of modern poetry, created by some of the most inspiring poets of color out there today! Each week, we’ll take a journey through a different poem, finding out what it’s trying to say and why it matters. Read the poem before our meeting, then come ready to discuss. It's okay if you don't "get" the poem; poetry can be that way...
- Poetry Analysis Skills: Students will develop the ability to critically analyze and interpret contemporary poems. - Cultural Awareness: Through the exploration of poems written by diverse poets of color, students will enhance their understanding and appreciation of various cultures and experiences. - Critical Thinking and Discussion Skills: Through active participation in class discussions, students will improve their critical thinking skills and ability to articulate their interpretations and reactions to the poems.
As an English teacher, I have taught the analysis of poetry via open discussion to middle and high school students. In addition, my Creative Writing studies included leading discussions of similar poems.
Homework Offered
Before each meeting, students are encouraged (but not expected) to write their thoughts, observations, and questions on the poem being to be discussed.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Some poems may contain profanity, mature themes, and/or sensitive topics (poverty, death, discrimination, etc.). Guardians are advised to check the course description for a list of poems to be discussed. Poems can be found through a web-search and will be provided via PDF upon enrollment. Since this is an ongoing course, guardians can easily unenroll and re-enroll their student depending on the poem to be discussed.
Poems will be sourced from public websites, including Poetry Foundation and personal blogs. Upon enrollment, I will provide a PDF of the poems.
