Class Experience

In this live class students will learn about different poetic forms, some poetic devices and will have the opportunity to listen to poems, write poems and share poems.
Day one- students will listen to several poems read by the teacher and discuss which they liked best and why. Poems chosen for this class will illustrate the following poetic devices: simile, metaphor, and rhyme schemes. Vocabulary introduced: simile, metaphor, rhyme, lines, stanza, couplet.
Day two- Students will learn about specific types of poems to include: haiku, sonnets, free verse, nursery rhymes and limericks. We will take turns reading some examples of each and learn what makes each type of poem special.
Day three- Students will practice writing Haiku. Specific instructions will be given to help students. Students will choose their own subject matter and we will discuss what subjects are appropriate for Haiku. Students will be given the opportunity to share their verses, if they wish.
Day four- Free Verse is the form we will write and practice in this class. Again, specific instruction of Free Verse will be provided. Students will write their own free verse and have the opportunity to share.
Day Five- Poetry Reading. The last class will be a poetry reading class. Students will be encouraged to have prepared a poem of their own to read and have critiqued by the class. If they prefer a student can choose a well-loved poem to read, instead. Guidelines for comments will be set at the beginning of the class.

As a teacher, teaching writing skills, is something I have especially enjoyed. I love to write in my spare time, especially letters and poetry. I believe that writing helps us to create the world we envision and the person we are. Teaching children to write from their soul is essential. Writing is how we look into ourselves. Writing poetry is a practice that can bring joy into the lives of others, as well.
