In this class, students will be introduced to poetry contained in Gyo Fujikawa's beautiful book, "A Child's Book of Poems." Students will listen to one or two poems per class meeting and will discuss ideas they have regarding the topic of the poem. They will work together to identify the rhyming words in the poem, learn about unique features in poems, and increase their confidence in speaking aloud by repeating lines and beginning to recite a poem beautifully.
Learning Goals
Students will identify rhyming words in one or two classic poems.
Students will express their understanding of what a poem is and what a poet does.
Students will explore the nature of rhythm in poetry.
Students will commit a poem to memory and recite it beautifully.

Poetry is a beautiful introduction to literature for young children. I have been homeschooling my children using a Charlotte Mason approach, specifically with the Ambleside Online curriculum, for four years and I have enjoyed exploring classic poetry with my children.
