Writing poetry is a fun way to get any learner more interested in writing, and poetry doesn't have to be intimidating when the student is able to write about what they know best- themselves! In this 8 session (4 week) class students will get to know each other and themselves by reading and writing poetry that is easy, fun, and inviting. The student will follow a specific format for each poem, however the subject can be about anything they enjoy- video games, sports, animals, etc. The first...
Students will learn about many kinds of poetry, including how to write them and where they originated from. Students will read poetry to use as examples for their own poems. They will also learn multiple poetic techniques, including rhyme scheme, hyperbole, alliteration, and more. Students will become more confident in their writing while also learning more about the most important person in their lives- themselves!
I have been teaching English for 15 years and poetry has been one of my favorite parts. I love showing students that words can be interesting and fun at the same time.
Students may work on their poem during class, however they should be ready to complete a poem they did not finish on their own time before the next scheduled class.
Students should have a notebook of their choosing and writing utensils- preferably pencil.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learner will be assessed with a final portfolio of their 5 favorite poems. Students will have the option of reading from their portfolio during the last class.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
