Reading comprehension is the ability to read a text and understand it. To do this, a reader must decode the words, make sense of them, think about what these words mean in a particular context, and understand why an author has chosen them. Several essential reading skills are needed for good comprehension, including retrieval, inference, and good vocabulary knowledge. Reading frequently, choosing a wide range of reading material, and asking and answering questions based on a text can help to improve reading comprehension. Reading a range of poems and answering questions based upon them can improve how well pupils understand poetry. This class will read and discuss the poetic devices in "The Crocodile" by Lewis Carroll.
