Class Experience
Poetry opens up the imaginations and hearts of young readers. It helps them to look at their world in a new way. Poetry is also the perfect way to teach children about the workings of language. Poetry as it is read aloud, helps to build phonemic awareness and understanding of complicated literary elements, such as metaphor and analogy. Students will improve their reading comprehension skills by visualizing and drawing a poem.

Plain paper Markers (pencils or crayon are acceptable but markers will display better when sharing)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will share drawings with class. Instructor will informally assess drawings for clues that the learner understood what was read.
20 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
