US Grade 7 - 8
Students will be ready to move forward a grade level after attending the full year of this course.

2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Progress reports sent every 4 weeks.
Grades Offered
Students will need the following supplies each day:
- The ability to print worksheets
- Good internet connection

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
This is story of peer pressure, rebellion, and identity. It centers around the rivalry between two groups of teens, the lower-class "outsider" Greasers and the more well-heeled, popular Socs (short for Socials). There is fighting, underage drinking, delinquent behavior, a rumble, a fatal stabbing, and a suicide.

This book is about friendship and the power of words, both to harm and to help, as students respond to their middle school's new cell phone ban by leaving sticky notes instead of sending texts. The story contains kids being verbally bullied and physically harassed for their appearance, ethnicity, and passions. 

The Summer of Bad Ideas by Kiera Stewart
This book contains family drama, secrets, adventure, mistakes, friendship and teenage romance.

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Uglies is set in the future and deals with our culture's obsession with physical perfection and hedonism. There's some fighting and a minor character is killed, not seen. A gruesome operation is described. Girl characters especially are brave and stand up to an oppressive regime.

Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lia
This book is about life in Vietnam, including the foods, clothing, traditions, the encroaching war, some politics, family structure, and more. It also tells the story of the life of immigrant as the main character struggles with a new language, eats new foods, meets new kids, deals with attitudes toward Vietnamese immigrants.

This is a true story.

The Lake by Natasha Preston
This is a young adult thriller that takes place at a camp on a lake. 

96 Miles by J.L. Esplin
This is a story of two brothers, 13 and 11, who walk down a remote highway in the wilds of Nevada while trying to survive. It contains robbery, some violence, and weapons.

Wildfire by Rodman Philbrick
This book is about a wildfire at a summer camp and the characters escape from it. It contains mention of drug use, rehab, and foster care.
