Unleash your inner playwright and craft compelling stories for the stage! Have you ever been captivated by a live performance and wondered how those stories come to life? In this class, you'll embark on a journey into the world of playwriting, learning the essential elements that transform ideas into captivating dramas, comedies, and everything in between. By the end of this course, you will be able to understand the fundamental principles of dramatic structure, including Aristotle's Poetics; confidently format a play according to industry standards; develop compelling characters and dialogue; craft a captivating monologue; and understand the differences between writing for the stage versus writing a novel. This class will be a blend of interactive lectures, engaging discussions, hands-on activities, and individual writing exercises. We'll delve into the theory of playwriting, analyze examples of successful plays, and, most importantly, you'll get to write your own scenes and monologues! To spark your creativity, you'll create a vision board to capture the essence of your play. We'll also explore various brainstorming techniques to help you generate fresh ideas and overcome writer's block. Throughout the class, you'll receive constructive feedback from both your peers and the instructor, creating a supportive and inspiring learning environment. Join us and discover the thrill of bringing your own stories to life on the stage! Enroll today and begin your playwriting journey!

Teacher expertise and credentials
My passion for playwriting has led me to work with young people in various settings. I've been a summer camp counselor and led theatre games and activities for elementary students. This taught me how to engage young learners and create a supportive environment for creative exploration. In middle and high school, I directed several plays, guiding students through the entire process from character development to performance.
I'm about to graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Theatre Education from Ball State University, where I've taken specialized playwriting units and received mentorship from experienced playwrights. I also designed and taught playwriting classes for high school students during my student teaching. This hands-on experience allowed me to develop effective lesson plans and provide individualized support to students as they explored their own playwriting voices. Through these experiences, I've developed a deep understanding of the playwriting process and a passion for sharing it with others.
