Playing with Words: Full Year Language Arts for Grades 4-6 (Ongoing)

In this ongoing class, students study the confusing, absurd, and humorous results of breaking grammar rules, while simultaneously learning the logic behind how to use them correctly.

Homework
1 hour per week. Each week students will be assigned work in "The Language Mechanic" workbook.

Students are assessed informally in class. Written evaluations or grades may be given by request.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Grammar can be confusing.  But sometimes when you break the rules, it can be funny and absurd!  For example, the following sentences have two very different meanings:

"I love cooking dogs and kids." (Ew!)
"I love cooking, dogs, and kids." (Much better!)

Each week in this ongoing class, students are introduced to a humorous example of what happens when you ignore a grammar rule.  Then they learn the rule and the logic behind it.  Finally, they will practice the rule in "The Language Mechanic" workbook by The Critical Thinking Company.  Below is a list of topics covered each week:
