Class Experience

In this 4-week class, students will build on their basic recorder technique and music reading. Students should already know how to hold a recorder and proper articulation. They should be familiar with playing notes B, A, and G (or more). They should also have some familiarity with reading notes and rhythms, although this will be reviewed. This class is designed as a continuation of "Playing the Recorder: A Fun Musical Introduction for Beginners".
Week 1: We will review playing notes B, A, and G. We will introduce C and D. We will practice reading rhythms using quarter notes, two eighths, whole notes, half notes, and rests. We will play games to help us learn or review the names of notes on the staff.
Week 2: We will learn some new songs using the notes B, A, G, C, and D. We will perform for each other, and take turns leading rhythm echos. We will also play "Rhythm Poison", using the rhythms we have already learned.
Week 3: We will focus on playing eighth notes with clear articulation. We will explore new songs using eighth note rhythms. We will also begin to read notes on the staff without written letters. We will play some staff note reading games, including note memory. We will introduce the notes "Low E" and "Low D".
Week 4: We will review everything that we have learned. We will play rhythm and note reading review games. We will play through our songs together. Then, each learner will be invited to choose a song to perform for the class, if they would like.

Learning Goals

Students will develop and improve their recorder playing technique, their rhythm reading and their note name reading. Students will learn new songs and become more proficient in their playing, as well as developing productive practice habits.

Supply List
1. Recorder: Each student will need a soprano recorder by the first class. A quality instrument, rather than a toy, will enhance the student's experience a lot. Yamaha and Angel are two suggested brands. These are available quite inexpensively from music stores.
2. Lesson book: Each student will need a copy of "Recorder Fun Book for Young Students" by Larry Newman. It is available here: https://www.westmusic.com/music-books-resources/music-classroom-books-materials/recorder/849845 or from other music stores.
3. Music stand (optional): a folding music stand is optional, but will be helpful for learners, as it allows them to see the music clearly, while also maintaining good posture.
