Description

Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will learn the basics of recorder playing such as proper posture, chin position, how to blow and breathe properly, hand position, fingerings, and music theory through a flexible course.
Having received both my B.A. and M.A. in Music Performance, I am very confident in playing instruments in front of others and using the skills I have learned to teach younger students. I have taught private woodwind music lessons to children ages 8-16 for about 3 years in a private school.

In elementary school, I learned to play the flutophone (basically a plastic recorder) and was taught the basics of fingering and music theory. I was taught in a group setting of 20-30 students and we learned to play and perform simple melodies. Throughout high school, I enjoyed learning various instruments, such as the recorder and tin whistle. Both were very easy to learn as I had had previous instruction from the flutophone classes. My favorite recorder player is Michala Petri who inspired me to pick up the sopranino, soprano, and alto baroque recorder. I own two beautiful wooden recorders and various whistles and enjoy playing various classical and Irish pieces in my spare time. I hope to share what I have learned with my future students!
Practice between classes is required for this class. At-home practice is vital for growth and development! Students should practice at least 10 minutes every day.

Optional practice worksheets will be provided to use during practice time. Students will record what exercises, fingerings, and songs they have worked on to keep track of their practice time each week. Parents may assist learners to help keep track of what they need to practice or have practiced.
supplies needed for lessons:
- soprano recorder w/ Baroque (not German) fingering, I recommend the Yamaha YRS-302B Soprano Recorder, Baroque fingering, Key of C on Amazon ($7.99) as it is the least expensive but best quality for beginners. Please be careful when purchasing your instrument, not all instruments are the same quality, fingering, etc.!
- chair
- printer (as worksheets may be provided for class or for at-home practice)
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will be assessed with a simple rubric when they are ready to earn their next belt. Their progression through the belts is dependent on how much time and effort they put into practicing outside of class. Eventually, students will learn each song in class, but they will earn their belts faster with some practice during the week. 10 minutes every day is best for quick progress!
No live meetings, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Students will need a quiet environment to watch videos and practice.

Each week, students will be able to access a lesson video(s) that has been recorded by the teacher. The video will be a private link to Youtube (only those who have the link may view it.) Parents will need to assist learners with the video. An account is not needed to view videos.
I have gained permission to use resources for classroom purposes only; these resources SHOULD NOT be shared with other learners. The resources will mostly be used in a screen share.
