Hi parents and learners! In this fun, hands on math class, students will learn so many new things all while using play-dough! Each student will need several colors, a play knife, and a device that can be used to make the impression of dots such as a straw or the end of a pen or pencil. They will explore many new concepts of math using the play dough. In the first section, each child will make patterns, count play-dough dots, practice comparing greater than and less than, adding and subtracting using play dough and measuring using a ruler. Next, they will explore the properties of different shapes, create arrays and use them to add and subtract, create their own patterns and designs using the shapes learned and even be introduced to division, and a bit of fractions! I try to be a fun and engaging teacher who encourages all students to be hands on. Since this is a younger class, parents are also encouraged to come play with us!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, all! My name is Melissa Tidmore, mother of 3 wonderful children and a wife to an awesome husband. I have a degree in Business Administration and my certification in education to teach all subjects grades k-8. I graduated college with the title of "most outstanding student" in the school of business and have always loved school! I worked for 7 years as a public school math and science teacher and 5 more tutoring on an individual and small group basis. My main areas of focus are secondary math, but I have taught all levels. I LOVED teaching in the school system but left the education field to stay home with my children. I have since been homeschooling my own children as well as teaching secondary math in several co-ops in my area. I have taught all grades from K-Algebra 2! I particularly enjoy showing children that subjects such as math are not only applicable but also can be understandable and fun. In class, I often say "math should make sense." I love seeing the "light-bulb moment" for my students and I hope that they also walk away with an enjoyment that they may not have had before.
In addition to my Business degree, I also have a license as a cosmetologist-although it is more of a hobby these days. For a short while, I was in this field full time and still enjoy it as a hobby. I enjoyed creating off-the-wall styles, worked in runways shows and was in a magazine featuring Avante Garde styles. Though I have all but hung up my shears, you will still see me playing with hair any chance I get.
My hobbies include teaching, reading, gardening, doing crafts of all kinds, crochet, hair, and spending time doing anything adventurous and fun with my family. I especially love outdoor activities!
I truly try to have fun in all that I do and I feel that a smile is never wasted. I hope to see you and your student in my class soon!
