Plants that Eat Things: A Look at Carnivorous Plants
Class experience
In this class, which is designed for students who are new to the topic, we will learn about three types of carnivorous plants (pitcher plants, flypaper traps, and fly traps) through photographs, video clips, and teacher-presented notes. Students will then be led in creating their own scientific drawing of the most well-known carnivorous plant, the Venus fly trap. The class will end, if time allows, with the reading of the instructor's homemade picture book about carnivorous plants. Students...
Students will be able to describe the features of three types of carnivorous plants which allow them to attract, capture, and break down prey.
Students will need a blank piece of paper and pencil for their drawing, plus optional colored pencils or crayons. Drawing experience is not required, but enthusiasm and willingness to participate is!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We will be discussing a predator-prey relationship in nature as well as the decomposition of insects. There will not be overly graphic images, but those who are squeamish about insects may not enjoy this class.
