I have taught elementary education for 16 years in the public school setting for grades 1-3. I have a strong background in reading and love using reading to teach across other content areas. It is my goal and desire to show every child that reading can be fun and that it can cover a variety of interests and that we can learn many things while reading.
The students are asked to have the book printed and stapled together for their first live class (I will share the pages they will need the Sunday prior to their class). They will also need: a journal, a pencil, colors (optional), glue (to glue books into journal), stapler (to staple books together), and internet access to research kid-friendly sites the teacher lists each week. For the last session - class #9, the students will need a set of oil pastels (crayons will work if you do not have oil pastels) and an 11''X13'' sheet of black construction paper.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
The student will be conducting research through kid-friendly online sources to complete a book over each of the eight planets. At the end of the unit the student will complete an art project in which they draw each of the eight planets on black construction paper to scale using oil pastels.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Parents may need to help assemble the book for students that have never created a Tab-It book before. Even though it will be modeled the first class, they may benefit from a little extra support when putting it together.
